Abstract

The increasing rate of drug resistant micro-organism has led to the continuous research for new bio-active compounds of plant origin. The objective of the study is to investigate phytochemical analysis, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Smilax kraussiana mesin root. The phytochemical potential of the extract was evaluated using qualitative and quantitative phytochemical procedures. The extract antioxidant properties was evaluated through 2,2 diphenyl-1-picry/hydrazine(DPPH*) and 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) (ABTS*) radical scavenging properties, Nitric oxide radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant property (FRAP) assays. The antimicrobial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration was evaluated using disc diffusion method and serial dilution method. The result reveals the presence of phytochemical constituents. The extract exhibited great antioxidant activity. The result also reveal that the extract have strong antimicrobial activity against the following micro-organisms, staphylococcus spp, streptococcus spp, neisseria spp, kliebsella spp, bacillus spp, and salmonella spp. The extract exhibited an inhibition zone ranging between 10.67±1.25mm and 24.67±1.56mm. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) ranges from 62.5 mg/dl-500 mg/dl. This preliminary study revealed that the extract have antioxidant property and antibacterial effects. Characterization of bio-active compounds and determination of it toxicity could lead to the development of valuable drugs for the treatment of infections.
