Abstract

Autism can most clearly be understood from the inside looking out. Those looking in have no frame of reference with which to easily understand what they are seeing. This study establishes that autism is neither neurodevelopmental nor a disorder. It is simply an inherent neurophysiological difference in how the brain processes information. The unique and defining characteristic of autism is hyperfocus, the perpetual and unrelenting state of intense concentration fixated on one thought pattern at a time to the exclusion of everything else. Autistic people exist in a specialised inner space that is entirely intellectual and free of emotional and social distractions. We study the world in great detail, but we are not emotionally invested in what we see.
